Written in 1843, Charles Dickens’ legendary narrative ‘A Christmas Carol’ continues to warm the hearts of readers all over the world with its sentimental celebration of the Christmas season and overt reminder to us all about the true meaning of Christmas. In this heart rending tale Dickens skilfully contrasts disparaging descriptions of hostile, penny-pinching Ebenezer Scrooge with the warm and kind-hearted Cratchit family, who suffer at the hands of their spiteful employer, representing the economic hardship and poverty which was rife in Victorian England. However, after three ghostly visits Scrooge opens his heart to the plight of the poor, making this tale one of Dickens’ best loved and most widely recognized novellas. Definitely worth a read!
