This is one of my favourite books.
It is set in Germany during the Second World war and tells the story of Liesel, who is sent to live with foster parents, Hans and Rosa Herbermann, after being abandoned by her mother. Her younger brother died on the way to where the foster parents live. The story of Liesel’s time with the foster parents is actually told by Death who knows her story because he finds her notebook amongst the destruction of the street where she lived after it was hit by a bomb. Death is therefore a ‘book thief’ as he has stolen her book. However Liesel is also a ‘book thief’ as her foster father teaches her to read and write and she begins to ‘borrow’ books from the home of a rich lady. Whilst living with the foster parents a Jewish friend of Hans turns up called Max and despite the risks they take him in and hide him from the Nazis. Max and Liesel become great friends and the story centres around this friendship and also her friendship with Rudy the boy who lives next door.
